The Market Development and Technology Enterprise Department (Ministry of Science and Technology) organized a discussion on Intellectual Property (IP) valuation. During the discussion, the Intellectual Property Valuation Software, known as “Value IP,” was introduced. This launch coincides with the rapid development of Vietnam’s intellectual property landscape, aligning with the financial sector.
The Value IP software is expected to address several challenges in the Vietnamese market, particularly in valuating businesses with significant intellectual property assets. Previously, valuing intangible assets such as trademarks, copyrights, and patents faced difficulties in Vietnam due to the absence of a comprehensive official database on intellectual property.
However, with societal and technological advancements, intangible intellectual property assets have become increasingly significant in the portfolios of Vietnamese businesses. This trend has led to a growing need for accurate, transparent, and clear mechanisms for valuating intellectual property assets, especially for technology-oriented companies where intellectual property assets hold a higher proportion.
According to the AEC 2025 report, intellectual property continues to play a vital and fitting role in contributing to the national and regional socioeconomic development goals. In recent years, the term “Intellectual Property Finance” has gained prominence in ASEAN countries.
Intellectual property finance involves valuating intellectual assets, placing these assets high in a business’s asset structure. In necessary cases, intellectual property assets can become a feasible financial alternative to conventional assets. For instance, when a company needs to pay a debt or collateralize assets for a specific project, intellectual property assets can be a viable option.
In countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines, many organizations and government bodies have started promoting Intellectual Property Finance initiatives. These initiatives serve as alternative financial strategies to help businesses innovate and access funding.
In Vietnam, the IP Value Talk seminar clarified the opportunities associated with valuating intellectual property assets and intellectual property finance. Through this seminar, policymakers and policy planners gain a clearer foundation for creating plans and developing appropriate legal documents to implement intellectual property finance programs and related factors.
Currently, existing methods for valuating intellectual property assets are time-consuming and costly, posing obstacles for businesses engaging in activities like mergers and acquisitions (M&A). If a business cannot accurately determine its value, successful M&A transactions become challenging, as one party may lack trust in the value presented by the other.
With the Value IP Intellectual Property Valuation Software, companies of all scales and industries can better determine the value of their intellectual property assets. This software enables businesses to accurately assess the value of their intellectual property assets, contributing to successful collaborations and partnerships with other businesses.
