During the launch of the National Intellectual Property Day, known as Hari Harta Intelek Negara (HHIN), National Forum 2024 on April 25, 2024, Deputy Minister Fuziah Salleh of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs highlighted the need for increased public awareness of intellectual property (IP) in Malaysia.
Salleh emphasized the ministry’s commitment to enhancing public understanding of IP, aiming to support local communities in nurturing creativity and assisting innovative business owners in protecting their intellectual property rights. She underscored the importance of this initiative in fostering a conducive environment for creativity and innovation.
According to Salleh, the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) recorded 246,178 intellectual property registrations up to 2023. Additionally, she noted that 118 geographical indications (GIs), primarily from Sabah and Sarawak, were recognized as intellectual property, reflecting the cultural heritage and national treasures of Malaysia.
Salleh explained that in many states, local law enforcement is required to register items to safeguard their recognition as cultural heritage, thereby enhancing their appeal as tourist attractions. Geographical indications serve as symbols indicating a product’s characteristics and origin, contributing to its unique identity and market value.
