The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) recently unveiled its highly anticipated announcement, No. 562, presenting the Data of Added Value for National Patent Intensive Industries in 2022. This comprehensive report sheds light on the pivotal role of patent-intensive sectors in China's economic landscape and their contribution to national development. According to the announcement, the added value of patent-intensive industries in China surged to an impressive 15317.6 billion RMB in 2022, marking a notable 7.1% increase compared to the previous year. This growth trajectory underscores the resilience and dynamism of these industries, even amidst global economic challenges. Importantly, the proportion of patent-intensive industries' added value in GDP rose to 12.71%, reflecting their growing significance in driving economic expansion. Delving into the internal structure of these industries, the report highlights the dominance of the new equipment manufacturing sector, which boasted an added value of 4164.3 billion RMB, constituting 27.2% of the total added value. Following closely is the information and communication technology (ICT) service industry, contributing 22.1% with an added value of 3388.8 billion RMB, while the ICT manufacturing industry contributed 20.8%, with an added value of 3181.8 billion RMB. In terms of growth rates, the new materials manufacturing industry emerged as a frontrunner, witnessing a remarkable growth rate of 12.8%. This was closely followed by the ICT manufacturing industry, which recorded an impressive growth rate of 11.5%. Additionally, both the ICT service industry and the new equipment manufacturing industry demonstrated robust growth, with growth rates of 10.6% and 8.3% respectively, signifying their resilience and adaptability in the face of evolving market dynamics. However, the pharmaceutical and medical industry experienced a slight setback, with a decrease of 16.8% attributed to the high base in 2021. Nonetheless, its average growth rate over the past two years remains promising at 8.3%, compared to 2020. Looking ahead, the CNIPA has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the quality and value orientation of patent-intensive industries, incorporating indicators such as the proportion of added value to GDP in its mid-term goals for 2025. These measures aim to better reflect the development status of patent-intensive industries, guide structural transformation, and leverage the role of intellectual property rights in fostering high-quality development. Patent-intensive industries serve as engines of innovation and economic growth, embodying the convergence of intellectual property, technological innovation, and industrial development. Globally, these industries have emerged as critical drivers of economic progress, owing to their exceptional innovation capabilities and market competitiveness. As China navigates its path toward becoming a global innovation leader, fostering high-value patents and nurturing innovation entities within patent-intensive industries will be paramount. Intellectual property service agencies must prioritize initiatives such as joint innovation of key technologies, risk prevention, patent portfolio optimization, and the realization of patent value. By facilitating seamless coordination between innovation-driven development and intellectual property strategies, these efforts will catalyze industrial transformation, driving forward China's quest for high-quality and efficient growth.
