According to entertainment website Koreaboo, on January 5, 2024, Samcheok, a coastal city renowned for its BTS picture zone sculpture and signs, made the decision to dismantle a popular BTS-themed sculpture and other related installations located at Maengbang Beach. This action is believed to be a response to an escalating conflict over intellectual property rights initiated by HYBE, the entertainment company managing the globally acclaimed K-pop group BTS.
HYBE recently issued formal requests for the removal of BTS-related structures from various local governments, sparking concerns about potential violations of intellectual property rights, which ultimately led to Samcheok’s decision.
These structures hold more than just physical significance; they also possess cultural importance, as they have become tourist attractions for BTS fans. Referred to as “holy sites,” these locations have gained recognition due to their association with BTS’s album cover images or music video shoots. Today, these places are iconic landmarks recognized by the dedicated fan base. For example, Maengbang Beach in Samcheok gained prominence for its connection to BTS’s hit song “Butter.”
While some local governments criticized HYBE’s actions as excessive, a representative from HYBE clarified that safeguarding BTS’s intellectual property rights is necessary to protect the group’s image and prevent any potential harm.
